Selection of New Crabapple cultivars as Pollinizers for apple Orchard

Abstract
New selected crabapples potentially useful as pollinizers in single-cultivar apple orchard were evaluated for their flowering times, % pollen germination, and disease resistance. Their efficiency in the setting of fruits following controlled pollinations on ¢¥Fuji¢¥ and ¢¥Tsugaru¢¥ at private orchard in Sangju, Fruit Tree Research Institute in Suwon, and Arboretum of Sung Kyun Kwan University was also examined. Flowering times of SKK 4, SKK 13, SKK 14, SKK 15, and SKK 16, whose flowering times were from April 30 to May 1, were corresponded to that of ¢¥Fuji¢¥ and ¢¥Tsugaru¢¥. Especially, SKK 14, SKK 15, and SKK 16 were resistant to Alternaria leaf spot and rust. SKK 14, SKK 15, and SKK 16 had high percentages of pollen germination and fruit setting when controlled pollination was performed with ¢¥Fuji¢¥ and ¢¥Tsugaru¢¥. Those of ¢¥Fuji¢¥ and ¢¥Tsugaru¢¥ pollinated with selected crabapples were usually more than 80.0% in three different area including Suwon. Fruits of ¢¥Fuji¢¥ and ¢¥Tsugaru¢¥ pollinated with selected crabapples were similar to those of fruits open pollinated in terms of fruit diameter, fruit height, fruit shape index, fruit weight, soluble solids content, acidity, fruit hardness, and seed number. After storage for 3 months, soluble solid, acidity, and fruit hardness of ¢¥Fuji¢¥ pollinated with ¢¥Pioneer X¢¥ and ¢¥Almey¢¥ were not significant different, compared with those of fruits before storage. Therefore, crabapples as pollinizers of ¢¥Fuji¢¥ and ¢¥Tsugaru¢¥ did not have any effect on fruit quality. Considering the obtained overall results, it was thought that SKK 14, SKK 15, and SKK 16 could be promising pollinizers for single-cultivar apple orchard.
